Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, also known as "The Rock," was a maximum-security prison located on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. The prison operated from 1934 to 1963 and housed some of the most notorious criminals in American history.

The prison was built in response to the need for a maximum-security facility to house dangerous criminals who were deemed a threat to society. In 1963, Alcatraz was closed due to high operating costs and concerns about its effectiveness as a prison. Today, the island is a popular tourist attraction and is home to the Alcatraz Island Museum, which offers visitors a glimpse into the history of one of the most notorious prisons in American history.
